The Project...

JCMB Temple forms a small part of a much larger fourth year mathematics project. The title of the project, unsurprisingly, is Japanese Temple Mathematics. There are four of us tackling this project and between us we'll be researching the history of Japanese Sangaku, learning about the mathematics involved, trying our hands at some of the more challenging problems, and putting historic problems in the hands of modern mathematical tools, like Maple and MatLab.

Along side this, we're aiming to become familiar with the infrastructure behind the Sangaku custom - how well it works, how much of a response it elicits in a population of curious mathematicians and whether it can find innovative new solutions to old problems. This is where JCMB Temple comes in - a real-life test of the system. Follow us on twitter to see how it all goes.
